Nusserwanji Tata, the scion of a family of Parsi priests, broke with tradition to start a business, settled in Mumbai in the early 1830s, trading in cotton and other commodities.
His only son, Jamsetji, raised in Navsari, joined him in Mumbai when he was 14. After an education at Elphinstone College and a stint with his father's business, Jamsetji struck out on his own and set up his own trading firm in 1868, which marks the beginning of the Tata group.
Over 150 years later, the Tata group is a global enterprise, headquartered in India, comprising 30 companies across ten verticals. The group operates in more than 100 countries across six continents, with a mission 'To improve the quality of life of the communities we serve globally, through long-term stakeholder value creation based on Leadership with Trust’.
