They Are Invictus!

The Invictus Games, presented by Jaguar Land Rover, leverage the positive impact that sport has on the recovery and rehabilitation of military personnel dealing with mental or physical challenges. A few glimpses from the 2018 games

During a trip to the Warrior Games in the United States in 2013, Prince Harry witnessed the positive impact sports had on the recovery and rehabilitation of military personnel. It inspired him to launch a similar event back home in the United Kingdom.

He established the Invictus Games Foundation, which held the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014 in London with more than 400 competitors from 13 nations.

Jaguar Land Rover has been the Presenting Partner of the Games since its inception. The company is committed to furthering the legacy of support to the armed forces by helping former military personnel transition into civilian careers. It has employed almost 1,000 ex-servicewomen and men globally and has supported eight employees directly on their Invictus Games journey.

This year, the Games were held in Sydney between October 20 and 27, wherein 500 competitors from 18 participating nations, competed in 11 medal sports as well as golf and wheelchair tennis.

Some competitors at this year’s Invictus Games were also given the opportunity to test JLR’s autonomous technology ahead of the event. The competitors’ feedback helped JLR to understand how this technology could improve the lives of millions of people living with limited mobility.

Rowing upstream

Dave Innes, a former paratrooper with the Canadian Airborne Regiment, defied the 50 per cent odds of survival after a training accident 25 years ago. At the Games, he won silver in the Men’s Indoor Rowing IR2 One-Minute Sprint.

Unconquered and how

When a helicopter flew overhead mid-match, it triggered Paul Guest’s PTSD. His opponent Edwin Vermetten comforted him and received JLR’s ‘Above and Beyond Award’ for embodying the spirit of the Games. Guest won the match.

George Nepata

An exceptional goal

New Zealand’s George Nepata, a tetraplegic competitor, won the Jaguar Exceptional Performance Award. During a wheelchair rugby match against Australia, Nepata outperformed by scoring the final goal in the nick of time.

Aiming for the sky

Alex Nguyen, a combat engineer, lost a leg to an IED in Afghanistan. The Games have encouraged the wheelchair basketball high-scorer to become an abnormal psychology specialist to help other veterans with PTSD.

Sisters in arms

UK pair Poppy Pawsey and Sarah Robinson left spectators in tears when they competed in the Women’s 50m ISD Freestyle heat. Poppy who qualified 8th, swam back to cheer her mentee Sarah, who suffers from an anxiety disorder.

Wind beneath her wings

Sadie Melling, a British Royal Air Force nurse was left with broken legs, when a strong wind blew her off-course during a skydive seven years ago. She overcame her fear of the wind, making her debut at this year’s sailing event.

Cavell Simmonds

Age is just a number

67-year-old Canadian Cavell Simmonds, the oldest competitor and a debutant at the Games, was inspiring. She participated in wheelchair rugby, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, ‘murder ball’ and archery, and won the Golf Open.

Laurentiu Serban

The royal blade runner

Laurentiu Serban lost a leg while rescuing colleagues from an IED-hit vehicle in Afghanistan. Finishing fourth in the 1500-metre run did not dampen the Romanian competitor’s spirit. He says, “Whatever happens, life can continue.”

Jamie Biviano

Her wheels of fortune

Jamie Biviano was temporarily paralysed armpits down, while serving the US Air Force in Afghanistan in 2012. She trained for both road cycling events, swimming, indoor rowing and athletics, which brought back her mobility.

The beauty of teeing off

For Randy Little, a Canadian infantry veteran, his first brush with the Games was life-altering. Earlier, he was in no condition to step out of his house. He considered himself lucky to be teeing off along Sydney’s beautiful coast.
