The story of the company is about harnessing the fruits of science for goals that go beyond business. The history of Tata Chemicals can be traced to the Okhamandal Salt Works set up in 1927. It became a part of the Tata Group in 1939 when then Chairman JRD Tata took it over.
Tata Chemicals has successfully evolved over the years, starting from industrial salt and soda ash to a range of science-based products that improve the quality of life of our customers. Our legacy in consumer products includes India’s most popular salt brand Tata Salt and India’s first national dal brand Tata Sampann. The Consumer Products business has since been demerged into Tata Consumer Products.
Tata Chemicals is now innovation-led, sustainable chemistry company with a global footprint that covers Asia, North America, Europe and Africa. The current product portfolio focuses on Basic Chemistry Products and Specialty Chemistry Products.
The Basic Chemistry product range includes soda ash, sodium bicarbonate and other key ingredients to some of the world’s largest manufacturers of glass, detergents and other industrial products. Tata Chemicals currently is the world’s third largest producer of soda ash with manufacturing facilities in India, United Kingdom, Kenya and the United States. We are also the sixth largest producer of sodium bicarbonate.
The Specialty Chemistry product range covers four verticals with a strong position in Agri Sciences through subsidiary company Rallis India which reaches 80% of India's districts and has seven power brands in crop protection and agri-input solutions. The Nutritional Sciences vertical offers an innovative range of good-for-health nutritional solutions and prebiotics under the brand name Tata NQ.
The Material Sciences solutions include cutting edge products such as Nano Zinc Oxide, Highly Dispersible Silica and other grades of silica. The Energy Sciences business is carving out a new path by building a circular economy around Lithium-ion technology – starting from active materials, to cell and battery manufacturing, and finally to recycling critical materials from used batteries – under the brand name InsperiCo. Tata Chemicals is the only company in India to start Li-on recycling operations.
We have established world class R&D capabilities with a dedicated band of research and scientific personnel working at facilities in Pune and Bengaluru in the emerging areas of material sciences, nutritional sciences, nanotechnology, biotechnology and agriculture sciences.
We address the needs of the community through our partners Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development, Okhai Centre, Uday Foundation and Tata Chemicals Golden Jubilee Foundation. In 2018, we launched Ncourage Social Enterprise Foundation to improve social issues including clean drinking water and livelihoods.
During the Covid pandemic, we supported the Indian government’s relief activities by focusing on production and distribution of disinfectants and sanitisers. We also worked with communities around our operations to provide relief and support.
