The history of the Tata group is intertwined with the history of the financial capital of India, Mumbai.
Nusserwanji Tata, the scion of a family of Parsi priests, broke with tradition to start a business, settled in Mumbai in the early 1830s, trading in cotton and other commodities. His only son, Jamsetji, raised in Navsari, joined him in Mumbai when he was 14. After an education at Elphinstone College and a stint with his father's business, Jamsetji struck out on his own and set up his own trading form in 1868, which marks the beginning of the Tata group.
Walk through the streets Jamsetji walked, the buildings he, his sons and successors built, listen to the story of the Tatas, and experience the architecture, the philanthropy, and the enterprising spirit of the Tatas via the Tata Heritage Walk.
Guided Walk (Group)
Ideal for group learning and team bonding, our partner Tata Heritage Walks leads you through a three and a half hour walk which starts at the Gateway Of India (or Apollo Bunder) and ends at the erstwhile Tata Palace.
We pass through various locales of significance, such as the Kalaghoda square, the Dadabhai Naoroji Statue, Bombay House, Horniman Circle, Rajabai Towers, and Esplanade House. It includes a break and a tasting at the Tata Starbucks outlet in Horniman Circle.
We walk usually on Saturdays at 8.00 am and advance reservations are necessary. There will be a group fee. To book or for more information, write to Tata Heritage Walks via email.
